INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENT CURRICULUM

Facilitated by: Julie Hansen, Early Years Consultant

This workshop delves into the development of a child-led, responsive curriculum that evolves from educators’ observations of children's thoughts, ideas, interests, and theories as they interact with materials in early years settings. Participants will explore how to create meaningful invitations and provocations inspired by these observations, all while reflecting on the learning process occurring in these experiences. Educators will also learn how to create documentation that deepens learning, strengthens program-family connections, and provides opportunities for children to revisit and reconnect with past events.

Julie Hansen has been an Early Childhood Educator for 24 years, having received her Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Douglas College. Since then, she has gained experience in various areas in the Early Childhood Education sector as a preschool director, a supervisor in after-school care, 3-5, infant, and toddler programs, and has worked in centre management. Her primary focus has evolved to encompass team leadership, management training and program development. She has had articles published in provincial and national ECE journals on the topic of emergent curriculum and leadership. Her goal as an Early Childhood Educator and facilitator is to support fellow educators and early years professionals in providing high-quality early learning experiences for children and families.
