INTRODUCTION TO INFANT SIGN LANGAUGE

Participants can expect to learn:

1. What is the difference between infant sign language and ASL. 

2. Understand the benefits of infant sign language: Participants will be able to articulate how sign language supports early communication, reduces frustration for infants and toddlers, and promotes bonding between caregivers and children. 

3. Developing knowledge of basic infant signs: Participants will learn commonly used signs that are appropriate for infants and toddlers, such as “more,” “milk,” “eat,” “sleep,” 

4. Applying sign language in daily routines: Participants will be able to integrate sign language into daily routines (examples during meal times) this will enhance communication with infants and toddlers. 

5. Recognizing developmental milestones: Participants will understand how signing supports language development 

6. Enhancing caregiver-child interaction: Participants will explore how using sign language can strengthen the relationship between child and caregiver by fostering two-way communication. 

7. Promoting cognitive and social-emotional development: Participants will lean how infant sign language promotes cognitive skills, like memory and problem-solving and supports social emotional skills by allowing infants and toddlers to express their needs and feelings.

Patti Vandenbroek is a Registered Early Childhood Educator and an Infant massage instructor. She graduated from Fanshawe College's Early Childhood Education program in 1988. Then in 1989 attended Lambton college and completed the Infant and Toddler Care and Guidance Program.Patti has experience working with all ages of children. She has had many different roles in childcare over the years and is currently working as a facilitator in EarlyON St. Thomas Elgin, in the East Zone.She has been at EarlyON previously OEYC for 20 years. She finds joy in everyday moments with children and families. In my spare time I love to spend time with my family especially my granddaughter!
