BEYOND THE BOOK (ELGIN)

  • St. Thomas Public Library 153 Curtis Street St. Thomas, ON, N5P 3Z7 Canada (map)

Facilitated by: Maria Herron, RECE, BASC and Darlene Vreman, BA

This session will equip early childhood professionals with the knowledge, skills and tools to take literacy beyond the book, while igniting imagination and a passion for language and literature.

Maria and Darlene will briefly touch on the science and importance of being able to read before diving into how to choose quality books and how to create provocations and extend the experience with songs, rhymes, props etc.  Participants will have the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned by creating their own literacy rich experiences with provided items.

Maria Herron is a RECE working for EarlyON Child and Family Centre in St. Thomas. Her passion is literacy. She is also the Professional Development Trainer for Phonics in Motion. She also has a background with TVDSB working in FDK.

Darlene Vreman works at the St. Thomas Public Library, where she connects families with books and information. She has trained with Project READ in family literacy, and brings this training to programs and outreach opportunities
