OUTDOOR PLAY BOOK CLUB

  • Strive 265 Maitland Street London, ON, N6B 2Y3 Canada (map)

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder…he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”

(Carson, 1956)

Facilitated By: The Strive Team

As early years professionals, we will examine the importance of outdoor play and the beauty that comes from nature. The Sense of Wonder is a timeless volume that treasures the memory of an early-morning walk when the song of a whip-poor-will was heard for the first time. Featuring serene colour photographs from renowned photographer Nick Kelsh, this helps us all to tap into the extraordinary power of the natural world.

In our book club selection, The Sense of Wonder: A Celebration of Nature for Parents and Children, Rachel Carson captures the essence of the wonder-filled world of children. Carson enraptures how to nurture a lifelong sense of wonder, how to maintain the lens we once had from when we saw nature for the first time as children, and how to preserve a sense of wonder and awe.

After reading the book independently, we will come together as a group on October 24th at Strive, to discuss and share what we heard, learned, felt, and have been reflecting on. Light refreshments will be provided.

A copy of the book, mailed directly to you, is included in your registration. These books are ON LOAN to you from Strive and will be collected at the conclusion of this opportunity.

*Spaces are limited, so in registering, we kindly ask that you commit to attending the gathering on October 24th.

**Please note: Registration closes on October 10th at noon to ensure we can mail your book with enough time for you to read it before meeting.

While we welcome participation from outside of the Early Years sector, please note these learning opportunities are intended for early years professionals and the early years lens will be emphasized.
