A NETWORK OF PEDAGOGICAL COMPANIONS

Facilitated by: Karyn Callaghan, ECE Dipl., M.Ed., President, Ontario Reggio Association

It is invigorating to participate in a network of educators who have made a commitment to ensure that philosophy / theory be kept closely connected to practice, that they aren’t saying one thing and doing another. As pedagogical companions, we will take responsibility for our own and each other’s learning, interrogating dominant discourses that are depleting us and diminishing children, and experimenting with ideas that incline consistently in the direction of stated views and beliefs. We are offering this invitation to co-construct a context where we might think together in large and small groups both during and between gatherings. Engaging with pedagogical documentation (in-the-works) created by participants will be a strong characteristic of network gatherings. We will experience the joy of creating new understandings and fresh perspectives – an antidote to feeling depleted.

After working with young children for several years as an Early Childhood Educator, Karyn Callaghan became a professor in college and university ECE programs, and has had the privilege of learning with children, educators, families and artists for over four decades. She founded and coordinated the Artists at the Centre project in Hamilton Ontario that brought artists into early learning programs, and contributed to the development of the Ministry of Education’s pedagogy for early years document How Does Learning Happen?. She has been a keynote speaker at conferences across four continents and with Carol Anne Wien and artist Jason Avery is co-author of a book entitled “Documenting Children’s Meaning”, published by Davis Publications.
