Join children's book author and Educator, Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow for this special virtual event. Jamilah will discuss the benefits of positive representation in children’s literature in child care and early learning settings. Using her own books as a guide, Jamilah will demonstrate how to apply anti-racism and social justice concepts to children’s books.
This event is made possible by funding from the City of London and Middlesex County and is part of a focused local initiative to bring more diverse stories, identities, and lived experiences to bookshelves in licensed child care settings.
Facilitator Bio
Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow is a Philadelphia-based children’s book author and educator. Her picture books and short fiction, which center Black and Muslim kids, have been recognized by many including TIME and NPR, and she is an Irma Black Award silver medalist.
A former teacher and forever educator-at-heart, Jamilah is probably most proud that her picture book, Your Name is a Song was named the December 2021 NEA Read Across America Book and that it is included in the standardized curriculums of several major U.S. school districts.
