Facilitated by: Ginny Yurich, founder of 1000 Hours Outside

This monthly opportunity brings childcare professionals together to discuss the challenges and successes of outdoor programming.

As we continue to adapt to the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increased reliance on technology to support our daily lives. The addition of more virtual learning has been particularly impactful, and has underlined how essential spending time outdoors, connecting with nature and engaging in physical activity is for children!

We are very fortunate to be joined by Ginny Yurich, founder of 1000 Hours Outside for this month’s session! The objective of 1000 Hours Outside is simple: to encourage families to match the average amount of screen time a child will be immersed in annually (about 1,200 hours), with time spent in nature. For more information about this movement, please see the 1000 Hours Outside website.

Ginny is a Michigan mother of five and the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, a global movement designed to reclaim childhood. She is a thought-leader in the world of nature-based play and its benefits for children. One of her top priorities is to inspire parents and teachers to spend time in nature. Her 1000 Hours Outside Challenge spans the globe and many people from all walks of life look to her for inspiration as well as practical tips on how to put down the screens and get outside.

Ginny has a BS in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Michigan and is also a speaker, author and illustrator. Her children’s book, The Little Farmhouse in West Virginia was published in February, 2019 and her book, 1000 Hours Outside Activity Book was published in April of 2021.
