Facilitated by Stephanie Smith, RECE from TimberNook Elgin

Join us for a Community of Practice on outdoor play! The outdoors is an important part of our day with children and this monthly opportunity brings childcare professionals together to discuss the challenges and successes of outdoor programming.

This month, we are joined by Stephanie Smith from TimberNook Elgin to discuss the importance of reconnecting with the natural world.

Stephanie is a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a passion for outdoor education. She is currently completing her            Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Indigenous Studies with a focus on land-based pedagogy. She believes strongly in supporting children with whole body, deep play opportunities to build connection between children and their natural environments.

There has been a longstanding struggle to effectively support children in deep outdoor play experiences, especially when the weather isn’t considered ideal. Educators often rely on providing materials to support engagement in what can then become a heavily adult-regulated outdoor environment. Stephanie will have us consider instead how we, as a community of Educators, can encourage more authentic, child-led outdoor play.   She will also have us explore our innate need for connection with nature and how we can approach the land-body relationship through an ecological lens.

We hope you’ll join us!
